Sweetgrass has slightly different significance in different communities. To the Anishinaabe Nation (Woodland Indians), it is believed to be the sacred hair of O'gushnan, Mother Earth, and is often braided; with the three sections representing mind, body, and soul. Braiding of the sweetgrass plant is usually a group event that brings communities together and connects each member. Sweetgrass is much more than a nice smelling plant that can be burned. It represents the connection of humans to earth and sky and is used in many ceremonies and prayers.
Sweetgrass is one of the 4 sacred medicines - Sage, Sweetgrass, Tobacco and Cedar. Sweetgrass is wonderful for cleansing and purifying space, or our bodies.
